Fairy Tales & a Family Technology Tip!

Hello all!

We've been having loads of fun learning about fairy tales in our classroom. Since our time in the classroom is so limited and the children are constantly asking to read more fairy tales, I thought it would be helpful to post some links to online stories. I hope you can have some fun family time with these beloved tales. Ask your child to identify some of the elements of fairy tales in each story. Here's a list of some of the elements we have been discussing.

* mean/wicked character

* BIG problem

* royalty (princess, prince, queen, knight, castle)

* groups of 3 or 7

Oh! One more thing... These videos are being posted using a wonderful tool called SafeshareTV. It is an incredibly useful tool for teachers and parents. SafeshareTV allows children to watch videos from Youtube without the risk of inappropriate content appearing on the screen (ie. comments below the video, advertisements, or thumbnails for videos along the side of the page). Best of all, it's very easy to use. If you find a video that you'd like to share with your child, follow these steps:

1 - open the video on Youtube and copy the link from the address bar
2 - go to http://www.safeshare.tv/
3 - paste the address from Youtube in the box
4 - Click on the Generate Safe Link
5 - Click on Take me to the safe view

I absolutely love this tool! There are so many wonderful videos to support learning and this allows us to share them without worrying about the other items on the screen. It is important to note that SafeshareTV does not edit the video itself so you always need to preview it yourself to ensure that it's appropriate.

Summer Reading ~ Books & Reading Levels

Hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine and staying cool in this HOT weather! A good place to escape the heat is always the library. To help maintain your child's reading level during the summer holidays, it's important to make time to snuggle up and read. I always recommend that parents and children take turns reading. When it comes time for your child to read, try to find "just right" books that are an appropriate level. I have compiled a list of books that you may wish to check out on your next visit to the library. It's organized by level to make book selection a little easier. Happy summer reading!

Time sure flies...

Well, you can certainly feel the excitement in the air around the halls of St. Gregory these days. Summer holidays are almost upon us. I recall that it was about this time last year when I learned that I would be moving to first grade and I was thrilled. Thrilled, but unsure of what to expect.

In looking back at the year, I am so grateful for the blessing of watching the children grow before my eyes. The first few days were filled with nervous little giggles and the pressing question asked by all first graders in September, "When is centre time?". Let me tell you, it is not fun to be the person to break the news to children that there are no dollhouses, sand tables, or paint centres in their new home away from home. We got through that along with the other trials of first grade: untied and tangled shoelaces everywhere, lost teeth (felt like hundreds!), and learning how to sit in desks. Of course, these are all overshadowed by the incredible experience of seeing children become readers and writers. Simply amazing.  When all is said and done, I loved every minute of it and will cherish the time spent with my little 'firsties'. I would like to thank all of our wonderful and supportive families. It certainly takes a village... Enjoy a happy and safe summer!

Welcome back! I hope everyone enjoyed a restful holiday with family and friends. We have been back at school for a few days and are quickly getting back into our routine. December was so busy that there was not much time to post so I thought I'd do a little catch up now!

First, Mme. Hanson and I would like to thank everyone for the donations to our 'angels' from the Angel Tree. We hope it brightened their Christmas morning! Here are a couple of photos of the gifts we sent to our 'angels' because of your support and generosity.

We were very fortunate to have a little visitor in our classroom for the month of December. Jingles, the elf, appeared one day with a letter for us to read. He asked if he could stay with us until the holidays and we agreed - of course! We enjoyed trying to find him each morning and searching for his letters. Jingles even put up a Christmas tree for us and delivered Polar Express bells. Here are some pictures of our little friend and a copy of his first letter.
